Vintage, a new trend in web design
Recycling ideas, using old stuff, giving new meanings to past ages… Designers are going to the back to rescue previous fashion styles and to revive them. The use of vintage style is growing in website development, based on catching elements of past times.
The word ‘vintage’ was copied from the process of picking grapes; but nowadays is used for referring to elegant and old clothe. In web design, that style is becoming more and more popular, especially for clothing shops, corporate designs, news, stationery businesses and blogs, but any company can explore this way of designing that is stealing glances.
Vintage websites look really different, as if they are handmade. Awake feelings and emotions creating an old atmosphere that make people remember their lives in the past. Invite people to evoke memories at the same time you promote your products and services. That’s the key.
Thinking of retro components
- Strong, dirty and dark colors. Beginning your design, think of red, brown, black, gray, purple, gold or silver. They give and old appearance.
- Background can be made with textures like newspaper or an old map, torn or used paper, old styles of wallpaper… just think and be creative.
- Use script fonts, old-style typography (as those cartels of ‘reward’ and ‘wanted’ we used to watch on west films). Handwriting also works.
- Graphics are the most important. Do you remember those ads which included illustrations of women, men or children of the 1910s, 1930s or 1950s? That’s what you are looking for. Recreate the ambience of your grandparents’ childhood.
- Illustrations can include newspapers, vinyl and old devices (cars, radios, photos).
